The only barley- or wheat-based gluten-free beer I’ve tried since my diagnosis is Estrella Daura Damm, and I got sick. Supposedly an enzyme added to negate the active gluten compounds reduces the levels to 3ppm, but I wasn’t about to try Omission or any of the extraction-style gluten-free beers. I did think that my testy digestive tract might be reacting more to the alcohol (of which I don’t partake very often), but a recent article suggests that testing for gluten in barley/wheat-based beers may not be accurate. Just be careful, and follow your gut! Here’s an extra review of a few beers by NPR, as well as Gluten Dude’s take and reader comments.
